Because ESG is part of the ABC

What role does ESG play in high-security storage

In the debate about the sustainability of services and products, transportation and warehouse logistics companies are at the top of the list of those affected. Their challenge is to combine ecological responsibility with operational efficiency. People and the environment should play an equal role in this.

The demand for sustainability has penetrated far into the world of finance and investment advice. So it’s understandable that you demand ESG compliance when choosing a high-security storage service provider. That’s why we at Helveticor not only subject our choice of transportation solutions and fuels to strict sustainability standards, but also the way we treat our employees.

5 criteria that give you information about the sustainability of your high-security service provider

ESG bei Hochsicherheitslagerung

1. what is your high-security logistics provider doing to combat the climate crisis?

The Swiss Climate certification ensures exemplary compliance with strict environmental standards and a continuous commitment to reducing COâ‚‚ emissions. This includes an extensive analysis of emission sources and provides for the development and implementation of targeted measures to increase energy efficiency. Helveticor bears the “certified CO2 optimized by Swiss Climate” label. It underlines our contribution to tackling the global climate crisis by actively promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly security logistics.

Our environmentally friendly initiatives include participating in reforestation projects that help to offset unavoidable COâ‚‚ emissions. In 2023, we implemented measures such as switching to LED lighting and implementing an energy-efficient heating system to further reduce our COâ‚‚ emissions. We subject these efforts to ongoing monitoring and annual recertifications.

2. what precautions does your provider take for high-security fuel logistics?

Certain fuels enable a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. This also applies to HVO100 diesel. The abbreviation HVO stands for Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil. This sustainable fuel is produced from renewable raw materials such as vegetable oils, waste and residual materials as well as animal fats and is virtually free of sulphur and other pollutants. Compared to conventional diesel, HVO100 is more environmentally friendly and actively contributes to reducing environmental pollution. At Helveticor, we switched our vehicle fleet completely to HVO100 diesel at the beginning of 2023. This switch has reduced the COâ‚‚ emissions of our delivery vehicles by 30%.

3. how sustainable is your provider's route planning for high-security logistics?

Two factors are decisive for the sustainability of a transport company: route and delivery volume.

  1. The further the distance, the greater the fuel consumption.
  2. The more empty runs, the more environmentally damaging each kilometer traveled.

Both factors can be optimized through intelligent route planning. At Helveticor, we take this causality into account with efficient route planning that allocates time and resources according to the highest efficiency standards.

From the field: "Preferably straight to the destination"

In our sustainable route planning, especially for urban delivery routes, experienced dispatchers combine several orders for several delivery addresses and plan the route in a resource-optimized way. To do this, we use the many years of experience and local knowledge of our transport professionals and refine them with ultra-modern and artificially intelligent route optimization applications. The result is maximum energy efficiency, which benefits people in urbanized regions and the environment itself.

4 How sustainable are the means of transportation that your provider uses for high-security logistics?

At first glance, sustainability and transportation seem to contradict each other. For example, it is not easy to choose sustainable means of transportation in international air freight transport. Nevertheless, there are also environmentally friendly alternatives in the transport and warehouse logistics sector.
Rail transport, for example, is particularly environmentally friendly, as it produces significantly lower COâ‚‚ emissions than road or air transport and is also highly energy efficient. Or consider HVO100-powered vehicles or electrically powered means of transportation.
When choosing a provider of high-security services, take a close look at their modal split and the mix of their means of transportation.

5 What is your high-security logistics provider doing for a better future?

Sustainability has become a corporate aspiration and is deeply embedded in the DNA of many companies. ESG practices that affect all areas of the company are also a good idea in transport and warehouse logistics – from dealing with employees and the local sourcing of materials or transport pallets to the modal split and the use of drive technologies through to the selection of partners and suppliers.
Thanks to our long-standing cooperation with local suppliers who operate in an environmentally friendly manner and thus contribute to a sustainable supply chain, we at Helveticor meet the current ESG standards and keep pace with their further development.

From the field: "Designed for generations by tradition"

We are a Swiss company and part of a family-owned Swiss group of companies, namely Planzer Transport AG. This is why we focus our economic orientation not only on the present, but above all on the future.

For example, every year we train around 380 young people in over ten professions. Across Switzerland as a whole, we have an apprenticeship quota of 6.5% of the Group-wide workload. Two thirds of these apprentices continue to work for us after passing their final apprenticeship examination. This is also what we mean by promoting young talent and sustainable corporate management.

Short and sweet

When it comes to the sustainability of high-security services, a top-down view is needed: of the way in which sustainability is interpreted strategically and implemented operationally, of the choice of fuels and means of transportation, of the attitude of the management and, last but not least, of the responsibility towards future generations.
When choosing your business partner, pay attention to the extent to which they combine innovative solutions with best practices and what approach they take to optimizing and using modern technologies. Such an assessment shows the extent to which a service provider contributes to climate protection. We at Helveticor have a clear opinion on this issue: sustainable action is also possible and can be implemented effectively in security transport and warehouse logistics.
